Born and raised in San Benito Texas, Roberto lives approximately one mile from his childhood home. He drew cartoons in math and algebra class to escape the mind boggling boredom inflicted upon him by his sadistic teachers. Currently, Roberto is a federal employee, and he has recently completed a promotional coloring book for the US government. Over one million copies have been printed of that so far. A graduate of the University of Texas a Brownsville, Roberto once dreamed that he was being chased by a giant ham sandwich. He also has an endearing addiction to overpriced highly caffeinated premium coffees and related products. You can frequenly see him at work in one of our local coffee shops.

Jose Maria better known as Joe Hernandez was born in San Benito, Texas on July 28, 1944. He was number 8 of 11 siblings. As a young child he recalls getting spanked by his parents for drawing cartoon pictures on the house walls and pillow cases with crayons.
It wasn’t until he was married and had two children in the mid-70’s that Hernandez decided to take art classes at TSTI in Harlingen, now known as TSTC two nights per week for two years. In conjunction he took one on one art classes from two well known Harlingen artists by the name of Laveron Mahola and Ana Williams. Most of his art work was sold to continue his studies. Some of his treasured art pieces are owned by his adult children.
Hernandez’ art pieces were oil, charcoal, pastels or just plain pencil. His last painting was done in 2007 in pastels. Now reflecting on some past art work he did, he desires to renew his art passion.
Hernandez is now retired yet still maintains his business as a barber since 1963 and has been the Mayor of San Benito since 2006.

Marilyn was raised in Iowa and her working career as a registered nurse and subsequently as a pharmaceutical representative was in Illinois. She and her husband, Les retired to Arkansas in 1986 and became a Winter Texan until moving permanently to Brownsville six years ago.

After retirement from Marilyn was able to seriously pursue her life-long interest in art. She has studied over the past 25 years with many renowned professional artists and by experimenting with different media and techniques has developed her own unique individual style with emphasis on texture and color. She describes this style as “playful experimentation” where the process of painting is more meaningful to her than the final product produced. She states, “ I create art as a playful expression to please myself and if others should also appreciate my work it is an added joy”.

Marilyn has conducted numerous classes and workshops in the Lower Rio Grande Valley over the past 18 years. She is a member of Laguna Madre Art League, Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, Harlingen Art League, Art & Cultural Center of Brownsville and the Rockport Art Center. Marilyn has been given top awards in watercolor, mixed media and printmaking categories in juried exhibits including Best of Watercolor in 2004 and First Place in 2012 in Watermedia at the Brownsville Museum International Art Shows. She also had the distinct honor of participating in Dissolving Boundaries: South Texas Artists in North Mexico at the Albertina Gallery in Matamoras, Mexico.

Cale Johnson was born and raised in Harlingen, Texas. Developing his passion for artistic expression at an early age, this self taught artist spent hours on end drawing, writing short stories, and penning poetry in his growing collection of sketch books throughout his youth. He became involved in local stage productions as a child and carried that interest with him throughout his high school years by writing, directing, and editing short films for a media technology course.
After graduating from Harlingen High School, Cale went on to attend Texas A&M University where he received a degree in Marketing. He returned to his hometown to teach Reading/Language Arts and coach at his former junior high Memorial Middle School for the next three years, passing on his love of the arts to his students. It was during this time Cale began experimenting with a new outlet to express his artwork in the form of the minimalist digital art program Microsoft Paint. Focusing on his passion for the movies, he has developed a series of digital paintings displaying famous scenes from popular films, working around the limited confines of the art program to create his work. He has since begun to explore other areas of digital art, including freelance graphic design work and creating his own comic strip Cosmic Bandito, but still enjoys creating more installments in his gallery of movie scenes in MS Paint.

Before rediscovering painting last year, Marc Pouhé was an award-winning actor from Austin, Texas. Marc discovered acting at Tulane University when a friend suggested he audition for William Shakespeare’s Pericles. He quickly became a student of classical theatre and contemporary drama but also excelled in musical roles such as Chicago’s Billy Flynn.

Marc launched his professional acting career in 2004 about the same time he began painting on canvas. He worked extensively with Austin’s premiere theatre organizations including Zach Theatre, Austin Shakespeare, and Mary Moody Northen Theatre at St. Edward’s University. Theatre credits include title characters in Macbeth and Othello, leading roles in Chicago, Six Degrees of Separation, Death and the King’s Horseman, Master Harold and the Boys, and supporting roles in Jesus Christ Superstar, The Exonerated, The Grapes of Wrath, Three Sisters, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Glass Menagerie, and several others. Marc is a three-time winner of the Austin Critics’ Table Award and a three-time nominee for the B. Iden Payne Acting Award. As Marc’s acting career began to blossom he put painting on the back burner.

In 2006, Marc expanded his focus to include film and television. He’s appeared on Prison Break and Friday Night Lights. Film credits include The Overbrook Brothers, Between Kings and Queens, Mnemosyne Rising, Play Time, The Ticket, Holy Hell, and Jesse’s Closet. On a lighter note, Marc is the voice of Dogbert in the animated web series on Dilbert.com.

Marc underwent a major life change after being diagnosed with kidney disease following an award winning performance as wayward preacher James Casey in The Grapes of Wrath in May 2009. He moved to Harlingen shortly after being diagnosed so that his mother, a pharmacist, could help guide and manage his treatment. Marc was introduced to Dr. Oladayo Sanusi in January of 2010. It is this doctor/patient relationship that influenced and encouraged Marc to begin painting again. The creative outlet provided by painting is an excellent surrogate for the creative rewards provided by acting. Marc enjoys the concrete nature and permanence of his artwork and looks forward to continued growth and development in the visual arts.

Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, I now live in California. I’m a retired US Marine Corps Officer and award winning photographer. Since 1983, in between tours of duty, I’ve been working in Hollywood as an actor, mostly involved in theater. Due to the economy I make ends meet by doing Actor Head-shots in Hollywood and occasional videography, editing work. Many of my photographic FINE ART images are from my travels while in the Marine Corps and my 2004 tour as an Army contractor in Kuwait. – Most of my travel images were taken with a Mamiya 645 MEDIUM FORMAT CAMERA and since 2001 started taking digital images.
90% of my images are straight photography a few obvious ones have been “Photoshopped”.
I see myself as an artist first and a photographer second because I paint with light to capture not just the form of an object but to also introduce a mood or emotional tie to the art piece. Because of this artistic goal my subjects are varied but hopefully have that emotional element in common.
So support a Vet – find the image that talks to you and buy it.

Alberto Rivera Galvan was born in Brownsville, Texas. He graduated from Brownsville High School in 1965. Alberto Rivera Galvan attended Texas Southmost College and Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas. In 1972, Mr. Rivera Galvan received his masters in All-Level-Art Education.

When he joined the Art Program in Texas A & I, he was introduced to abstract and non-objective painting. Since then, his work continues to exemplify his keen sense for color and composition.

Rivera Galvan served three years in the army and for his tour of duty he was stationed in Qui Nhon, Vietnam and Heidelberg, Germany.

Alberto Rivera Galvan was an educator in the Brownsville Independent School District for 30 years. For those thirty years he taught Art at Stell Middle School in Brownsville, Texas. He retired in May 2007. After retiring, he produced about 58 pieces of art. Most of his work was 18” x 24” in size. He considers his work a combination of a painting and/or monoprint using acrylic paints.

He had a one-man show on October 14, 2011 entitled “Trial and Evolution”. It was a retrospective look back at his art work from 1974-2011. It was hosted by and held at the Brownsville community Health Center. Mr. Alberto Rivera Galvan donated a painting entitled, “Timeless” a four by five foot acrylic painting on canvas. It was donated in honor of his mother:
